Brienno conserva la dimensione di un villaggio lacustre. A differenza di molti altri insediamenti, il territorio non è stato compromesso da un’espansione incontrollata ed è riuscito a mantenere un’identità forte.
Il sito si trova a nord del centro storico, a valle della chiesa del cimitero, dove un muro di pietra a tre arcate, contiene un terrapieno a circa sei metri di altezza dal livello medio delle acque del lago. Il muro non può essere modificato, né ulteriormente caricato.
Per rendere fruibile la scarpata si è costruita una struttura a sbalzo sul lago, appoggiata su colonne arretrate con fondazioni puntuali e micropali di sottofondazione.
Il progetto è composto da pochi elementi: la scala in pietra, la pavimentazione in legno e l’imbarcadero. Il piano della piazza è leggermente inclinato verso nord, tale inclinazione amplifica le dimensioni della piazza e la trasforma in un piccolo palcoscenico, da qui si aprono nuove viste sul centro storico e sulla riva opposta.
A sud il parco è concluso da due volumi in legno: i servizi igienici e la scala di accesso al magazzino e all’attracco per le imbarcazioni. Lo spazio fra la piazza ed il precedente piano di campagna è delimitato da cavi in acciaio, su cui crescono piante rampicanti.
Nel 2000 l’Amministrazione Comunale, conclusa la galleria di by pass, invece di perseguire un politica di sviluppo sconsiderata, ha optato per la valorizzazione del centro storico avviando progetti di spazi pubblici rispettosi del paesaggio e poco costosi. L’importo delle opere a base d’asta per realizzare il parco di via Regina è stato infatti di 340.000 Euro. I materiali scelti riducono al minimo anche i costi di manutenzione: l’uso della zincatura a caldo (studi LCA e analisi comparative tra zincature e semplici verniciature dimostrano come la zincatura ha performance migliori in termini di risparmio di materiali, di durata e di minore emissione CO2) per tutta la carpenteria metallica ad esclusione dei cavi in acciaio inox o l’uso del ghiaietto inerbito (ottenuto mescolando ghiaietto di pietra locale con terra di coltivo e semi) per i sentieri.
Il progetto si inserisce in un luogo di grande pregio paesaggistico, utilizzando materiali correnti.
Tutti i rivestimenti sono in assi di larice non trattato, un’essenza che diventerà grigia nel corso del tempo e assumerà una tonalità molto adeguata al contesto. La scala che sale al cimitero utilizza pietra proveniente dalle demolizioni del cantiere. I pianerottoli sono realizzati con piccoli elementi di pietra posati a secco di coltello secondo la tradizione locale.
Costi contenuti (di budget e di manutenzione), alto valore paesistico e storico del luogo e rispetto della struttura esistente sono assunti non come limiti ma come stimoli per una progettazione sostenibile.
