A Mourão (Portogallo) in un area protetta, classificata come Natura 2000 Network, l’intervento di Ventura Trindade architects ha l’obiettivo di organizzare un centro per la ricerca ambientale, transformando i tre edifici esistenti in modo da permettere la maggiore costruzione di area richiesta, con la minor occupazione di suolo possibile.
Gli edifici prexistente funzionano come elementi di appoggio di una struttura che si eleva sopra il terreno e si mantiene sospesa, organizzata secondo una serie di patii e percorsi tra i vari nuclei funzionali, consentendo al suolo di rimanere intatto e permeabile.
La costruzione è sospesa un metro sopra la quota piú elevata del terreno, definendo patii quasi privati attorno all’edificio di residenza e, a causa dell’inclinazione del terreno, un’altezza di 2,4 metri all’estremo opposto del rettangolo di 55 x 27,5 metri dove si definisce l’accesso affinaco all’edificio dei laboratori.
Il centro della costruzione è marcato da un patio di maggiori dimensioni, attorno al quale gravitano i diversi edifici, gli spazi esteriori coperti e i percorsi della stazione biologica.
Al livello del terreno, i piani sospesi inquadrano profonde viste sul paesaggio orizzontale.
Al contrario, a partire dalla rampa d’accesso alla quota superiore, il complesso è chiuso tra pareti opache, costituendo un intervallo alla contemplazione della natura e concentrando l’attenzione sui contenuti espositivi che ad essa si riferiscono.
A causa dell’estremo isolamento (nella campagna alentejana), la stazione è autosufficiente in termini energetici ed idrici, attraverso l’utilizzo di pannelli fotovoltaici disposti sul tetto e da un deposito per l’acqua piovana.
Tutti gli isolamenti termici sono costituiti a partire da un sistema di rivestimento in sughero expanso e le pavimentazioni esterne sono in traverse di legno recuparate dalle antiche linee ferroviarie.
